5 Ways to Make Money As Software Developer

Sigma School
7th February 2024

Are you a beginner in the world of software development and looking for ways to make money? Today, we'll explore five ways to make a living as a software developer. These options include becoming a software developer, teaching coding, freelancing, running a developer agency, or starting a tech startup. Let's dive in!

1. Becoming a Software Developer:

A software developer is a coder who solves business problems by creating software for companies. They build software that is a key asset for any business. While a degree doesn't guarantee success, companies are willing to hire skilled software developers without degrees. The average salary for a software developer ranges from 4,000 to 6,000 Ringgit in Malaysia and around 5,000 to 6,000 SGD in Singapore.

2. Teaching Code:

Teaching code is in high demand. If you have coding skills, you can offer lessons and charge an hourly rate. Teaching multiple students at once can provide consistent income. For example, you could charge 300 Ringgit per month per student. Boot camps in Singapore typically pay 200+ SGD per hour.

3. Freelancing:

Freelancing as a software developer allows you to control your time and potentially earn more money. Freelancers work on projects and get paid for their work. They can earn money by teaching code or building projects. Freelancing projects can range from small landing pages to large web applications.

4. Running a Developer Agency:

Running a development agency is different from freelancing. As an agency, you won't be coding; instead, you'll be focusing on closing projects, building relationships, and managing projects. Agencies work on larger projects and require sales skills, project management, delegation skills, and client management skills.

5. Starting a Tech Startup:

A tech startup is a company that aims to create a unique product or service in the technology industry. They focus on growth and scale, often prioritizing user acquisition over immediate profitability. Founders of tech startups must create a product that solves a user's problem and be prepared to invest in innovation.
