The Goal and the Vision of The Hacker Collective

Our goals is plain and simple:

We want to build 1000 hackers every year from our community

Why this goal? Malaysia currently has a skills shortage problem. From large corporates, to SMEs to startups, everyone is fighting a talent war. Apparently there isn't enough talent to go around, and it's only getting worse as good talent in Malaysia start going overseas to other countries, enticed by the higher salaries, better living standards and newer hotter tech startups.

At the hacker collective, we fear if nothing is being done, then Malaysia shall no longer retain it's prime position as a leading economy in South East Asia in the future. Thus, we asked ourselves, what exactly is the problem. Why are we facing this. The answer is simple. We are simply not producing enough talent. Or if we are, we should produce more, so as a country we can prosper.

Our vision is to ensure Malaysia as a country thrives in this ever increasingly competitive world.

Thus we need more talent if we are to compete against all the other nations. Technology and innovation is the only answer to ensure our continuous growth. For without it, we as a country face serious risks to our future.

Its all about changing the way we think

Apple's most successful TV advert that defines an apple user. 

We need to be different. We need to think outside the box. To break social norms. To become the round pegs in square holes. We should not be afraid to think different, be different. We should learn to make a mess of things, to stick out and try new ideas. We should be adventurers that explore the unknown. It's what made America the greatest country it ever was. We should learn from them and together build up our country, our region and ultimately the world, together.

The sentence below sums it up perfectly the hacker mindset

“Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.

Creating innovations through community hackathons

One day hackathons where individuals come and discuss, create and prototype ideas

Workshops and meetups on various hacker topics, hacking life, food, science, tech and many more.

Workshops on various hacking topics, from life to food to robotics to software.
