The real risk

The problem is not unemployment.

Malaysian graduates are told, more or less constantly, that the job market is brutal. The official statistics say something more specific and more useful than that. Graduate unemployment in Malaysia was 3.2% in 2024, which is very low by any international standard. Most graduates find work.

The number that matters is the other one. Skill-related underemployment among Malaysian graduates reached 1.96 million people, or 35.5%, in the third quarter of 2025, and for graduates aged 24 and under it was 66.0%. Two in three recent graduates are working below the level their qualification was supposed to unlock. That is the risk you are actually managing when you plan your first job, and it is a completely different problem from unemployment.

It matters because the two problems have opposite solutions. If the risk were unemployment, the correct move would be to take the first offer that appears. Because the risk is underemployment, the correct move is to be deliberate about the first role, since the first job sets the reference price and the trajectory for the next several. A graduate who spends an extra two months getting a developer role instead of taking a data-entry role in month one is usually ahead within eighteen months.

The jobs exist. The mismatch is the problem.

Pay

IT support is the easiest of these to enter and the hardest to leave, because the work does not build skills the next role wants.

Two things in that table are worth more attention than the numbers. IT support and helpdesk is the classic underemployment trap in Malaysian tech: easy to get, poorly paid, and it accumulates very little of what the next employer is buying. People stay for three years and find that their CV reads the same as it did on day one.

At the other end, the AI application row is the only entry-level position in Malaysia where a fresh graduate can start above RM 8,000, and it is gated purely on shipped work rather than on credentials. Nobody is asking for a machine learning degree. They are asking whether you have built something with an LLM in production and can explain why it failed the first time.

What works

What actually produces a first offer.

The honest ranking, based on what junior hiring loops in this market actually test:

  1. One deployed thing with a URL. Not a GitHub repository of coursework. Something running, that a person can use, that you can talk about for fifteen minutes. This outweighs everything below it combined.
  2. The ability to explain your decisions. Why that database design, why that library, what broke, what you would do differently. Interviewers use this to distinguish people who built something from people who followed a tutorial, and it is very easy to tell.
  3. Evidence of self-directed learning. A thing you taught yourself after the syllabus ended. This is the closest proxy anyone has for whether you will still be useful in two years.
  4. AI fluency with judgement. Employers assume you use these tools. What they are testing is whether you can tell when the output is wrong, so be ready to describe a time it was.
  5. Communication. Underrated in this market and genuinely differentiating, particularly for MNC and remote roles where most of your work is written.

What matters less than people think: your CGPA outside formal graduate schemes at banks and large corporates, the university you attended, the number of applications you send, and certifications. A cloud certification with nothing deployed is a well-known negative signal, because it suggests you optimised for the credential rather than the skill.

One further note if you studied computing and still feel unprepared: you are not unusual. Among people who enrolled and paid for our own programme, 27% had already studied computer science or IT and came anyway. A degree in the subject is evidently not sufficient to feel employable as a developer, which is a comment on how the subject is taught rather than on you.

If you did not study computing

The route in from an unrelated degree.

This is the most common situation among people entering Malaysian tech, not the exception. In our own enrolment records, 73% of paying students did not study computing and 56% had never written a line of code when they started. The route is well worn:

  1. Pick one direction rather than sampling four. Full-stack web is the highest-volume choice and keeps the most doors open.
  2. Build the foundation deliberately rather than through tutorials, which is the step where most self-taught attempts stall.
  3. Ship two or three real things, at least one with genuine users, at least one integrating something intelligent.
  4. Use your degree rather than hiding it. A finance graduate building fintech, a biology graduate building lab tooling, a logistics graduate building supply-chain software: domain knowledge plus code is a much stronger position than code alone.
  5. Apply to startups and agencies first. They hire on evidence. Formal graduate schemes filter on credentials and will be a harder door.

    A fresh graduate software developer earns roughly RM 3,500 to RM 6,500 a month at a local Malaysian company and RM 7,500 to RM 9,000 at an MNC or a funded regional startup. QA and IT support roles start lower, at RM 2,800 to RM 4,500. Graduates who can demonstrate shipped work involving AI integration start meaningfully higher, in the RM 5,000 to RM 8,000 range, because that supply is genuinely short.

  • Is it hard for fresh graduates to find tech jobs in Malaysia in 2026?

    Finding a job is not the hard part. Official figures put graduate unemployment at 3.2%, which is very low.     In rough order: something real you built and deployed that they can look at, the ability to explain the decisions you made in it, evidence you can learn quickly without supervision, communication clear enough to work with a team, and fluency with AI tooling paired with the judgement to know when its output is wrong. Grades matter at large corporates and banks with formal graduate schemes, and barely at all everywhere else.

  • Should I take a graduate trainee programme or join a startup?

    Graduate schemes at banks, telcos and MNCs offer structure, training, a recognisable name and slower progression. Startups offer more responsibility sooner, broader exposure, faster skill growth and more risk. If you are unsure what you want to do, the structured route buys you time to find out. If you already know you want to build software, a startup or agency will make you competent much faster because nobody is available to do the work for you.

  • How long should it take to find my first tech job?

    Three to six months of active searching is normal in this market if you have deployed work to show, and it is not evidence that anything is wrong with you. Without a portfolio it can extend well past that, which is usually a signal to stop applying for a month and go build something instead. Volume of applications matters far less than having one thing worth looking at.
