The hiring formula

Getting hired is not a reward for collecting certificates. A more useful lens is this:

A company needs to hire now, they believe you can do the work, and they believe you will be good to work with.

This is not a magic equation or a guarantee. It is a smart way to focus your energy:

Factor What it means Your move
Competence Can you build, explain, and improve useful software? Practise and ship proof.
Likeability Are you clear, curious, helpful, and reliable? Make collaboration easy.
Urgency Does this company need someone with your skills right now? Look for the need, do not try to force it.

A degree or certificate can help someone notice you. It cannot replace a working project, a clear explanation, or the way you show up with people.

Competence you can prove

Competence is the main lever. It is not knowing every tool. It is being able to take a small problem, make something that works, and explain your choices.

Compare these two introductions:

Claim: “I know JavaScript.”

Proof: “I built a quiz app. I used an array for the questions, checked each answer with a conditional, and fixed a bug where the score did not update.”

The second person gives a team something concrete to discuss.

Use a measuring stick

It is easy to overestimate or underestimate your progress when you learn alone. Show your work to people who are further ahead: classmates, mentors, community members, or maintainers whose projects you use. Ask one specific question, then use the answer on your next build.

Use AI to go deeper

Do not only ask, “Write this for me.” Try:

  • “Why does this conditional need ===?”
  • “What would break if this input is empty?”
  • “Give me one smaller test case before showing a solution.”

AI is most useful when it improves your understanding, not when it hides the part you need to learn.

Likeability makes collaboration easy

Likeability is not pretending to be outgoing or trying to impress everyone. It is the practical skill of making other people's work easier.

When you need help, compare these messages:

Hard to answer: “My app is broken. Help?”

Easy to answer: “I am building a quiz app. The score stays at 0 after I click an answer. I checked the button selector and logged the score. Could you point me to the next thing to inspect?”

The second message is brief, shows effort, and gives another person a useful starting point.

Community works the same way. Join conversations, share what you shipped, thank people whose work helped you, and be genuinely interested in what others are making. You do not need fake networking. A short, specific note such as “Your README helped me understand the setup, thank you” is human and memorable.

In a world full of generic AI output, your judgment, care, and follow-through stand out.

Find urgency and stay ready

You cannot control when a company urgently needs to hire. You can get smarter at noticing where useful work exists.

Look for signals such as:

  • a company is launching a new product or feature
  • a team has a clear customer problem to solve
  • a role description names the kind of work you have practised
  • people in a community are actively discussing a project or technical need

Then make your proof relevant. If a small business needs a booking flow, a working booking prototype and a clear explanation are more useful than a long list of buzzwords.

Your repeatable loop: build one useful thing, explain it clearly, share it with people, learn from feedback, then build the next version.

Keep showing up. Timing can be slow, but each project strengthens the part of your career you own.

Proof beats promises

AI makes it easier to look skilled. It makes real proof more valuable.

  • Live product: someone can click it.
  • Code: someone can see how you organised it.
  • Explanation: you can trace how an input becomes an output.
  • Debugging story: you can show what went wrong and how you fixed it.
